Fraternitas

Message from Custos

Pace e bene!  Peace and all good!
St Francis of Assisi greeted the people he encountered in this way, wishing them peace and all good!  Like today, St Francis lived in a time of wars and tensions between pope and emperor, between cities, between upper and lower classes, within families.  Which is why the blessing of peace is so critical, especially the peace within one’s soul.  But this peace can only come about when we believe in a God who is all Good and creates all things out of this goodness, especially human beings.  Yes, we do realise that our today is fragmented and fragile, and this message of peace and all good is threatened.  Hence, we need God and one another more than ever.  We can’t walk this journey of faith and life alone for God didn’t create us to be an isolated island.
Fraternitas is our Franciscan answer to the fragmentation and fragility around us – for youths, young adults and young married couples.  We call ourselves a fraternity and not just a community, for St Francis saw God as Father, and hence all created beings are brothers and sisters.  We are all connected to one another in Christ, journeying with one another in authenticity, simplicity and humility.
We welcome all of you to be part of our Franciscan family.  With us, you will delve deeper into the Word of God with our weekly Lectio Divina.  If you find the spirit of St Francis intriguing and inspiring, then you’ll learn and experience more at our monthly bookclub where we focus on the various facets of Franciscan Spirituality, so that our prayer life may be deepened and our hearts more attuned to God’s Spirit prompting us to greater love and freedom.  Welcome on board this adventure of love with us!
Fraternally yours,
Friar Derrick Yap, OFM

Who We Are

Our Team

Like the shepherd who guides his sheep, we are blessed to have our friars to guide Fraternitas in our mission to journey into God.

Fra. Derrick Yap, OFM

OFM Custos, Custody of St. Anthony (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei)

Friar Derrick loves music as a way to destress and to praise God, especially when singing with his band, Mystic Font. Apart from music, he enjoys the simplicity of St. Francis to “simply love God and love God simply”.

As a friar, he enjoys spending time for prayer and contemplation, which the friars take priority to do daily. Each day, he continues to learn about the depth and intimacy of Franciscan saints and their own relationships with God.

Fra. John-Paul Tan, OFM

Spiritual Assistant

Friar John-Paul enjoys hand-cut chips and fries (since he is a FRI-AR), and loves travelling the world for adventure. But beyond that, he was drawn to St. Francis as someone who was charismatic yet led a simple life.

As a friar, he loves how the journey of fraternity is about belonging and growing in maturity. He hopes that Fraternitas can be a vehicle to provide youths and young people with an ecosystem in their faith journey.

“Eight hundred years of Franciscan living has given the Church a rich patrimony of Franciscan Spirituality that I think the world is greatly in need of.”
