Chronicles of a pilgrim – Day 1 – Barcelona
#sequelachristi2024
It’s day 1 of the pilgrimage and I’m feeling excited! Upon landing, we were immediately greeted with local tapas delicacy. Having lunch surrounded by century old roman walls was an experience that felt surreal. It was as if history itself was welcoming us, whispering stories of ancient travelers who might have passed through these same walls centuries ago. The warm Mediterranean sun bathed the plaza, and the air buzzed with the lively chatter of locals and pilgrims alike.
Our one and only stop today was the Basilica De Santa Maria Del Mar. Santa Maria Del Mar is one of the most emblematic buildings in Barcelona. Its austerity and simplicity have made it the best example of Catalan Gothic that exists in Catalonia (Del Mar, 2024).
We celebrated mass and spent some time touring the basilica. In every corner was a different icon of our Lady and it was interesting to see different artist’s representations of Mother Mary. Each icon told its own story, reflecting the unique cultural and historical context in which it was created. Some depicted her in regal attire, crowned as Queen of Heaven, while others portrayed her with simple, tender expressions, cradling the Christ child in her arms. I found myself drawn to the vibrant mosaics, their intricate patterns shimmering under the soft glow of candlelight.
One particularly striking icon was Our Lady of Sorrows. Her sorrowful gaze seemed to pierce through time, reminding us of her immense love and sacrifice. Standing before it, I couldn’t help but reflect on the challenges in my own life and how Mary’s quiet strength could inspire me to carry my own crosses with grace.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, day one of our pilgrimage came to a close all too quickly. The early setting of the sun seemed to mirror the fleeting nature of time, yet it also invited us to pause and reflect on the beauty and grace of the day.
We returned to our accommodation, weary from travel and the day’s adventures, yet filled with a quiet sense of fulfillment. Though the lingering effects of jet lag beckoned us to rest, our hearts were brimming with anticipation for what tomorrow would bring.
As I prepare to embrace the peace of the night, I find myself filled with excitement and hope. What blessings and discoveries await us pilgrims on day two? I can only imagine the encounters, lessons, and moments of grace that lie ahead. With faith in my heart, I am ready to embark on the next chapter of this sacred journey.
